THE HOUSE AT STARBOARD ROCK
This property, located on the shore of Winter Harbor on a
high ledge just across
from Penobscot Island, will suit those who like tranquility, privacy and rustic charm. From
the windows, the deck, the shoreline or
from the cliffs, you will be treated to panoramic vistas
across Eastern Penobscot Bay to Deer Isle, Mount Desert
Island and Isle Au Haut. Ospreys, Bald Eagles, and seals will offer you hours of wonder and delight. The
7-acre property is on a peninsula, shored on one side by
"The Privilege", a peaceful tidal inlet, and having deep water mooring in Winter
Harbor on the other side, along with a shared dock in
Murch's Cove. The adjoining property, recently deeded to the
Vinalhaven Land Trust, is home to Starboard Rock, an island
landmark 160 foot tall cliff with a trail leading to the
top.
The large deck faces the panoramic views, a great place to
enjoy your morning coffee. Wild blueberries and
huckleberries surround the house. Yachts and schooners often
moor in the harbor overnight, making for exciting
boat-watching.
The house was built in 1963. The living room has a high
ceiling and built-in benches with cushions. The livingroom and downstairs bedroom were significantly remodeled in 2010, adding many additional windows to better enjoy the view, and to bring more light into the house.
There are 3
bedrooms: One with a king bed (which can be converted to 2
twins) and accessible by a ship's ladder, one with a full
bed and another small room with 3 bunks suitable for
children or small adults. There is a full bath and one
half-bath which also contains the washing machine and dryer
but fabric softeners can't even come close to the
fragrant smell of wind dried laundry!
The kitchen was
remodeled in 1998 with a large table for family meals. There
is no dishwasher. The house is fully furnished, including
bedding. Firewood is provided. Limited
to 6 people. No pets. $1500/week.
